Why donate?

We will preserve our community treasure by shielding the exterior from the elements through weather-resistant renovations; protecting the interior by updating its antiquated heating system; and making it fully accessible to seniors and the disabled by replacing its broken elevator.

Castle Crusaders’ Goals Realized

In 2017, the Castle Crusaders set out to raise 1.1 million dollars to shield  the exterior and protect the interior of Glamorgan Castle in Alliance.  The work is now complete.

An exterior building assessment was documented in 2015 by Elwin Robison of EDI Building Consultants.  His report was used to prioritize the renovation needed to weatherproof the Castle.  Coon Restoration in Louisville, Ohio, was hired to complete the necessary repairs.  All the skyward-facing joints were sealed or flashed.  Broken and missing roof tiles were replaced and many mortar joints were repointed.  The roofing work was supervised by Littleton Kirkpatrick of  Kirkland, Ohio.  Also completed was water line work on the terrace, and renovation to the east entrance, east bay window, and 4 chimneys.

The Castle Crusaders’ restoration co-chairmen are Chuck Onaitis and Maryjo Hepler.  They understood that maintaining consistent temperature and humidity in the building was paramount to protecting the plasterwork and hand carvings of oak, mahogany, chestnut, and walnut.  The Robertson Heating Supply Company in Alliance was extremely helpful in deciding on a system and suggesting a plumbing company to install a new HVAC system to replace the original 1905 steam heat. Standard Heating and Plumbing of Canton, Ohio, was chosen to complete the difficult task.

A campaign committee headed by Tom Moushey and guided by Dr. Don Swegan set out to raise the funds.  John Gross secured pledges. Robb Hyde handled the marketing of the idea and Phil Francis served as treasurer.  The Alliance community donated $650,000 from over 400 donors which was beyond our expectations. The balance was received through grants by the Stark Community Foundation, the Timken Foundation, the Hoover Foundation and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission.  A tremendous help was a matching grant from the Greater Alliance Foundation that encouraged the area businesses and residents to participate in the effort and allowed donations to be channeled through the GAF office.

In March 2020, all donors were invited to a “thank you reception” to see the work that was completed. Unfortunately, it was cancelled due to the corona virus restrictions.  An unveiling of the plaque that recognizes ALL donors was to be held that night.  The plaque hangs in the main entrance hall.  Donors are encouraged to come to the Castle to see it and find their names when the building is again open for visitors.
